Squirrel Fun

Beren asked me a couple weeks ago if he could have a pet squirrel and I told him he could if he could catch one...knowing that he wouldn't be able to. What I hadn't thought about was him getting help from the neighbors' dads on how to trap a squirrel. They told him if he lined up nuts leading to the house that he could catch one. The first day I saw him line up his little trail of bird seed leading to the door I thought, "Dang, beren's smart." But then I realized he hadn't thought that one up on his own. Anyway, the squirrels ate all the seeds but didn't come in b/c I kept making beren shut the door. Then a few days later he set up his acorn trail and made sure that it was all lined up just right. Yesterday when we all took asher down to the bus, beren came running out with no shoes on so I had him go back to grab a pair. Then he ran out of the house yelling about squirrels inside. I totally thought he was joking but he wasn't. One climbed up on top of the bookshelf in our laundry room/office and the other was in the living room. Yes, there were two in the house!! Thank goodness they just ran out without much prompting b/c mice scare me a bit and to have those big nasty bushy tailed rodents inside I was feeling a bit jittery. Beren still thinks he should have a pet squirrel and I was actually kind of proud of him for being so diligent with his goal. He's a cutie.

I can't believe they came into the house! That is so funny. And good thing they ran right out, can you imagine if they had hid under the couch or something? Yuck...Tell Beren that he's probably allergic to squirrels, too. He needs to get a lizard or something without any hair.

Oh that is awesome-that cracks me up!!! What a smart boy! The thought of having anything small and furry in the house (that is not house trained) freaks me out too. But, you have to give Beren credit-he is a problem solver...do you think he is a red (personality) like his mom??!?

what a little smarty pants. those neighbor dads should have some squirrels come and visit them, then maybe they would think twice about giving out free advice. I always wanted a pet squirrel I think they adorable. But my dad just used to shoot them in the backyard, so I knew that would never happen.

Nice. Not sure how I would have handled that! Yikes...

How are you guys? We haven't seen you in a long time. We'll have to get together soon. Hope you're doing well! :)

"Daddy, I want a squirrel."

"We'll get you a squirrel when we go home, Violet."

"I don't want any kind of squirrel, Daddy! I want a TRAINED squirrel!"

Be thankful for the little things... he could have wanted a trained one.

You should convince him he wants something imaginary...that will really mess with his head.
"hey neighbor guy, how do I catch a griffin...unicorn...phoenix?" That will keep him busy.
